The house cat is amongst the noblest of all creatures. Or at least that’s what they’ve fooled us all into thinking. Here are your cats from this week’s Shooting Challenge.

We took the photo with my cat Martta on our secret shady summer spot when sun was setting down. Martta is photogenic sacred birman who works as fulltime (except naptime) model so taking the photo was easy! Photo was taken with Fujifilm x100t 23mm f/2,0 1/30sec.

Leave Me Alone
Shy, but feisty when bothered, my cat has no name because I found her struggling to survive the cold winter in my backyard. I started to feed her because she was so skinny and now she is my friend that likes to sleep in and around my home. This is my one eyed cat Simon. I adopted him from a shelter when he was around a year old. The shelter told me that his eye had to be removed because of a bad upper respiratory infection. I thought it gave him character (and made him look like a pirate) so of course I started taking pictures of him and I’ve continued taking pictures of him for the last 12 years. In this shot he’s tolerating me but really just wants me to get the lens out of his face.

This is my cat Plato! My 2 year old son and I chased him around our backyard for a good 30 minutes this evening trying to get a good picture. He jumped up onto the fence to escape the young child and I was able to score this photo! I used a Nikon D7000 with a 35mm Nikon lens.

Though normally content with laying in the roasting pan (and anything box-like), Eleanor quickly jumped down after I managed to snap this pic. I think she’s on to me. With windows on 3 sides, Rory rotates around the apartment throughout the day as the sun does. If a windowsill has a warm sunbeam on it, there you will find Rory. And no matter how often I ask her not to, she refuses to stop sleeping on the curtains. Shot with a Nikon D90, 35 mm lens at f 1.8 and the light of the fading evening sun.

My cat Zelda. Her mom abandoned her during a rain storm a few years back. I found her as tiny kitten and taken her in ever since. I shot this while watching TV. She got on my belly and fell asleep. When I was about to take the photo, she open her eye. If looks could kill, she did not want me to wake her up.

Our cat can sleep through almost anything. Thunder, dogs barking, kids yelling, doors slamming. However one thing ALWAYS wakes him up, the rattle of his dry food being poured into his dish. Today we were upstairs on the other end of the house and he was having his usual siesta when his eyes flew open and he was wide awake. He had heard the call of the food dish! Seconds later he was headed downstairs for an afternoon snack.

This is Sunshine. My family’s 14ish year old barn cat. Despite his advancing age, he still goes out most nights, and occasionally gets in fights with other cats in the neighborhood, hence the head wound. He’s fine, it’s healing nicely. Anyway, I was reading on my computer, and he wanted attention.

Catching the normal house fly for Feather has become a bit to easy in a closed home environment . She now requires a true fair outdoor hunt for both parties involved. The best camera is the one you always have with you . I only use my phone which is currently the IPhone 6 for photos. Right before sunset on Saturdays is Feathers favorite time to hunt flies on the roof.

Best Toy Ever
Made the box after receiving some stuff I ordered. The cats didn’t take to it, so I just left it on the floor. Needed to clean so I put it on a Chair (to clear the floor) an Pigly found it profoundly amusing … on the floor = not, on a chair = Great :cP … He went in and only came half out within the next 10 minutes to see what was going on outside the box … The pic is from one those times. My name is Cortez the Kitten. But you can call me Cortez. I’m a 4 year old Tonkinese mix with a penchant for mischeviousness. I want to thank you for having this contest, as my human, Jill, let me and my mate Clare hang out on the enclosed deck ALL weekend. It’s been awesome. The deck sits over a bluff, so the treetops are at human height, and its called the tree house. We are allowed outside in this enclosed space with “human supervision only”. Anyhow…she wasn’t paying attention (silly woman) and I hopped up on the railing…above a 20 foot drop! Normally she’d yell at me and scoot me into the house but no…she grabbed her camera and encouraged my behavior (there’s another photo where I clearly express being caught on the railing…it was a close second!)

Nala used to go outside in Florida when we had a screened in porch but we hadn’t let her since we had been in California. One day a couple months ago she accidentally (accident on our part) got onto the porch and we have since been letting her enjoy some summer days outside, but with some anxiety. Nala is quite the thrill-seeker, getting over on the other side of the railing (we are on the second floor). She likes to watch when people walk by and sometimes hams it up for them. This is Gizmo, my year and a half old Bengal cat. He’s been spending most of the warm weather staring out the window wanting to go outside. So I got him a leash and we started exploring around the house. Now he screams and howls for it every day, smacking the door to be let out. He didn’t like the leash at all at first, but now when he sees it, he immediately stays still to let it be put on, because he knows it’s time to go outside. A lot of the time I think he’s just a dog trapped in a cat’s body; he rolls over for back massages and belly rubs and he sniffs and licks people when he first meets them. What better way to spend a summer day than taking a catnap? Budino (Italian for pudding) is an expert at such endeavor – he has turned catnapping into an art form.
This is Budino’s favorite spot on the couch. Not only does this spot offer the best seat in the house to live Cat TV of squirrels and hummingbirds, he gets to prop his head up using the armrest WITHOUT having to exert any effort of his own. Dozing off and waking up to Cat TV as he pleases without ever having to move. (This was taken using a Nikon D800 with a 50mm at F2 at 1/125.)

Ever since we have a balcony, Le(i)a loves to sit outside and watch life in her new kingdom. And the few days this summer it got actually warm outside,we usually find her lounging like a boss in the shaded part of the terrace, thinking up new mischief.

Mitu is a real basement cat. She usually lies on her favorite chair, often in the shade and sleeps the day away (nights are when Mitu shows us her best – or her worst). On days when this mysterious big yellow thing comes out in the sky, Mitu cannot keep from going outside in the balcony, where she can observe the insects buzzing around the plants and the world unfolding below. Always from a shady place behind the pots, though, because basement cat sees you, but you don’t see basement cat. Mitu’s picture was taken with a Canon Eos 650D with a 18-135mm lens at 135mm, f-stop of 5.6, ISO 400 at 1/250. A very rare piece of equipment was needed for the taking of this picture, and it was pretty hard to find it up here in northern Germany: the sun.

This is Turbo. He is a cat. He is a very special cat. Whoever assembled him didn’t follow the directions. He seems to be missing a few parts, and the ones that were used are cat factory irregular rejects.He walks funny. He makes odd, non-cat noises. He snores even when he’s awake. His front legs and paws bend in directions that they really shouldn’t. He loves going on car rides and we’ve even walked him on a leash with the dog. He loves the dog and will follow her anywhere. He just turned six years old, but is only as big as six month old. He is a very special cat. Ultimately, he’s perfectly healthy; he’s just not put together correctly. When it’s cat nap time, he loves sleeping in bags, boxes, or anything he can fit himself in to.
When a new box comes in to the house, like this one did Sunday, he hops in and owns it. He will defend his new spot to the death. As of writing this, he has been in the box for at least 15 hours, only leaving for a second to have a few bites of food when no other cat was within sight. I set the camera down on the bed right in front of him and snapped a few pics as he had finally moved enough in to the light to potentially get a good shot. Please note that he is awake in this picture. Those eyes are open. That’s normal for him. He can see perfectly fine out of those little slits. He is a very special cat.
I shot this on our Nikon D3100 with a Nikor 18-55mm lens at 18mm, ISO 800, f/3.5 with a 1/40 second exposure. I ran the RAW image through Photoshop CS6 to do some minor color correction and contrast adjustments.

Took the photo this morning. The subject is my rescue Japanese Bobtail cat and minor Tumblr celebrity, Dee Dee Del Fuego. My wife and I found her starving to death on a street corner here in Tokyo, roughly a year ago. I’ve been taking a lot of photos of her, she’s quite photogenic and not camera-shy. In this shot, she’s desperately trying to nap away from the hot sun peering through the curtains. She’s not too fond of the recent heat wave that’s hit the city and we don’t have central air. I used my Fujifilm X-E1 mirrorless camera equipped with the Fujinon XF 27mm f/2.8 pancake lens. The photo is at ISO 800, f/3.2, and 1/600 shutter speed.

This is Meow, sitting in my husband’s chair in our office at around 5 p.m. It’s one of her favorite places to curl up and lounge. The sun coming through the window provided some lovely backlighting, so I set the camera up on a tripod at her eye-level and waited. She obliged me with this look after a few minutes of obligatory ignoring me and grooming. Nikon D3300, f4.8, 1/15, ISO-400, +0.3 exposure bias. The lens was a Nikkor 55-300, set to a focal length of 100 mm.

This is Stan. Usually his brother Ollie is the one sitting here at the top of the basement steps but today it was Stan. While talking with two of my dog lover friends via text message and getting a picture of Amanda’s Shitzhu lounging on her boyfriend in the pool (also attached for embarrassment purposes), I remembered this contest and had to show them that cats are better than dogs. Not sure this is proof of that, but if this makes the cut at least Stan can say he is a star on the interwebs! And he likes Wilco also.

My wife and I picked up Otis from an animal shelter about 9 years ago. Back then he was about 1 so we think he’s about 10 years old now. He is loving and affectionate and a real bastard. He likes to nuzzle and then bite. We have to sleep with our bedroom door closed lest he comes in and attacks any toe or finger that might be hanging over the edge of the bed. He’s always hungry and always wants to get out side (he’s an inside cat). He attacks legs sometimes for no apparent reason. When it came time to photograph him he acted like a real cat, doing whatever he wanted to do, not what the photographer (me) wanted him to do. So here he is lying on the couch – because he really doesn’t do much more than that (except attack me, at which point it’s hard to take a picture of him.) Shot on my Nikon D600 with a Nikkor 50mm prime, f/1.4 lens at f/2, ISO 1800, 1/60 sec. Did I mention he’s a real bastard? We love him.
